Editorial

Welcome to the first Newsltne of 2003. What a start we have had to the year, firstly the floods and now, as I sit writing this, freezing weather and snow flurries! Hopefully things will get better and perhaps we can look forward to some nice warm Spring weather. Did you know that 2003 has been designated the European Year of the Disabled? The aim is to raise awareness to the problems people with disabilities face in doing everyday things that most of us take for granted. Last year, a local Access Group was formed which is looking into access for people with disabilities in Shefford. One of the problems they have identified is items being put on pavements by shopkeepers. I have been asked if I would pass on a request to shopkeepers, when putting items outside your shops - A-boards etc. please consider where they are placed in relation to street furniture and the walkway as it can make it difficult, not only for people with wheelchairs but also people with pushchairs trying to negotiate the hazards.
Newsline has additional pages from this issue. This decision was taken so that there would be more room for items from groups and organisations and general interest items. It will now be possible to include your small ads of up to 30 words - for further information and charges please contact Paul Makin on 01462 628860.
This year is the Golden Jubilee of the Coronation of our Queen. I wonder how many of you can remember how you celebrated that day? Does it compare with how Campton and Chicksands celebrated the Coronation of the Queen’s grandfather, George the Fifth, for which the catering was supplied by the proprietor of the White Hart Hotel. A copy of the invoice is replicated on the front cover. Although many changes have occurred in the area, the White Hart and its patrons are still involved in community events.
Regards,
Jennifer
