I would like to express my thanks to those friends and neighbours who gave me such beautiful cards, flowers and gifts during my recent illness. I am recovering well and wish to say a big "thank you" to everyone.

I would like to thank you all for your help and support over the years that I was your local press
correspondent. It was a continuous delight to be involved in supporting our Shefford groups and
organisations, giving them the
recognition they well deserved.
As a 'foreigner' import, I was
able to appreciate the wealth of
talent and drive we have in the
town and see at first hand what was going on.
Jennifer has taken over this role and already more space has been allocated for our area achievements. Well done! I know you will be well supported with items of news and views from residents and groups. Do please remember to spread your news each week. It helps you and us all as an active community.

MERRY-GO-ROUND
|
Merry-Go-Round Opportunity Group is a small charity based in Shefford Methodist Church providing a safe, friendly play provision for children, as young as a few months up to 5 years, with any special need. The special needs range from social disadvantage and behavioural problems to very specific disabilities such as Down Syndrome and Autism. Our care program is tailored to suit the individual needs of each child. The group has a great team of staff and volunteers and can provide one to one care when necessary, but have a minimum of a 1 to 3 ratio.
The group has been running for 19 years and was set up to provide for children who fell outside the range of provision available at that time. Over the years the role has changed very little, as young children are still not fully catered for in local settings, but given extra play opportunities, socialising skills and stimulation, in many cases, children have the chance to integrate fully into their mainstream provisions.
Free transport is offered within a 10-mile radius of Shefford to Merry-Go-Round for children without access to their own transport.
If you would like any more information about Merry-Go-Round, how we could help a child you know or if you would like to join our volunteer team of play workers or drivers, please feel free to contact Kathy Georgiou on 01462 629313.

SHEFFORD OVER 60'S COFFEE MORNING CLUB
|
The summer's flurry of activities are being enjoyed and booked. March saw 'Me and My Girl' appreciated at the Gordon Craig Theatre. Presented by the Hitchin Thespians, all joined in their celebration of this classic show. Their enthusiasm always comes across and is infectious. The British School in Hitchin was visited with all marvelling at this unique beginning of our universal education system. This is the only one left in the world now depicting the Lancastrian System. In April, Easter was marked with the Fish and Chips lunch and Easter Bonnet parade, causing the usual merriment this was followed by a visit to Bressingham Gardens later in the month. On the 25th of May a day at Southwold has been arranged. The Summer Holiday has been organised with another enthusiastic group looking forward to the latest challenges.
Though restricted on occasions, we co-operated with the Community Hall improvements and were rewarded with extra space and far better amenities than we ever dreamed of. Promised new chairs will also improve comfort and the auto fan system distributes the warmth so well. The club have made a donation towards furthering other benefits in appreciation of the project team's sterling efforts.
The Meningitis Appeal has already raised over £100 this year, with more to come and the Cancer Research will benefit again in the autumn. Community Cash Points are being collected again this year, with grateful thanks going to all who support this and us.
The management team would like to thank members and other supporters in the area who help to
make our group an enjoyable facet of their lives and in so doing help others.

TOWN MAYOR'S COMMENTS
|
Summer Gala.
Plans for the Summer Gala are progressing well. As with all such things there is a tremendous amount of work to be done prior to the event. I hope the weather is good for the day. It makes all the effort worthwhile when you see people enjoying themselves.
Joint Town & Parish Council Reception.
In March I went to the Joint Town & Parish Council Reception held at County Hall. Usually Mid Beds District Council and the County Council hold separate 'receptions' where there are presentations on such things as Bedfordshire Highways or the Waste and Recycling programmes. These presentations are followed by discussion about how well they are working, or not as the case maybe. This year the County Council and MBDC got together and ran a joint event. There were presentations from each about a range of topics followed by, sometimes, lively discussion. It was quite novel to see the two levels of 'Council' working together. Ever since I became involved with council work it's been said that if only they would work together we could really achieve better results. I suspect that with the impending changes in local government structure that Central government have in mind, it's the only sensible way to go. Just so long as they don't spend all their time trying to 'score points' off each other.
Councillors.
As the Newsline goes to print we are 3 councillors short. Russell Fletcher, Carol Rooker and Gloria Warwick have resigned due to pressures from full time jobs or family commitments. I would like to thank all three for their contribution to the work of the Town Council. Being a Town Councillor does take up some time, a lot of it during the evening. So we are three councillors short. It would be nice to see some younger people come forward to have a go. Anybody who is interested in finding out more can contact our Town Clerk, Geoff Barham on 01462 816321
Roads and Footpaths.
You may have noticed that a lot of the roads and footpaths in the town are in a deplorable state. Despite the lists of potholes, subsidence and general wear and tear that we put to the Highways Department, we never seem to get ahead of the game. We have new contractors handling the repair and maintenance programmes and they seem to be better than the last lot. The Town Council will be surveying the roads and footpaths within the town so we can present the Highways Department with a complete list of defects.
Several roads within the town are scheduled for resurfacing during the next twelve months. The biggest disruption will come with the works to correct the problems in Ivel Road. The problems were caused by the poor workmanship of the contractor who laid the sewer from the 'Churchill Way' estate. It's a shame they can't be made to contribute to the cost of repairs.

This is the address of the Shefford website. It is about to enter its tenth year (it was started in 1997) and since the present counter was set the following year it has now had over one hundred thousand 'hits'.
It has been accessed from every continent in the world with the exception of Antartica. I receive emails from around the world from readers reminded of happy memories of Shefford and past friends.
In addition to items of general interest the site now contains archive and current copies of 'Newsline' and also full Town Council, including committee, minutes.
Recently we have been given a selection of photographs taken for the Biggleswade Chronicle by George Skevington, their photographer for over 30 years. Some of these are already on the website, along with other old photographs from other sources. I hope to increase the number on display over the next few months.
At present the diary page is mainly copied from 'Newsline'. If you have any further dates - or anything else you would like to see on the website- drop me an email, addressed to: webteam@sheffordtown.co.uk
Remember that even if you do not have a computer of your own you can still look at the site on one of the library's computers. The staff are always willing to help.
Happy surfing

No Cold Calling Zone.
Hopefully the street signs denoting Shefford as a NO COLD CALLING ZONE will be in place by the time you read this. Whether the signs are in place or not the scheme is in operation. As I said in the last edition of Newsline, we need you to report these dodgy traders to the Trading Standards Officers as soon as they show up in the area. The quicker the report goes in, the quicker they will be moved on. Call 08454 04 05 06.
Speed activated signs.
Some more signs we are waiting to have installed are the vehicle activated signs to warn motorists who are travelling over the speed limit. We have three signs on order and we are hoping that the Highways Department will get them erected very soon. They are already a few weeks overdue. Every week we get complaints about the speed of traffic in the town area. Residents of Churchill Way are being harassed by fools driving at well above the limit.
Last year we nearly had a disaster when a car being driven at high speed, in Churchill way, slid off the bend and nearly entered the play area. One argument is that the play area should never have been placed on the outside of such a bend. We did point this out to the Planning Officers at the time, but of course, they knew better. Look at how well the route to the school is designed. The main point is, the vehicle was being driven dangerously by someone who perhaps should not be on the road without supervision. We must implement any measures we can to try and reduce vehicle speeds in the town before fatalities occur.
PC Nick Battams.
You may have read in the local press that the police officer assigned to the Shefford area has accepted another post in the Police Service. While I wish him well in his new job, I do regret the fact that he has left us. I have found Nick to be an extremely dedicated officer who put a lot of his off duty time into the job. A replacement has not been named as I write this in early April. Nick, thanks for your efforts to keep our community safe and thanks for the assistance and advice you have given to the Town Council and to me.

SHEFFORD LIBRARY
|
There really is "something for everyone" at Shefford Library.
We have a wide and varied stock of:-
• Books
• music CDs
• videos
• spoken word stories (ideal in the car!)
• DVDs
• large print versions of many titles.
We have now increased our total of Computers to six in the main library area as well as two in the Childrens Library.
All these computers have FREE internet access. You just need a Library Card and a Pin Number (available from the Library). Bookings are advisable at busy times, but not always necessary.
Other facilities include a photocopier and a public fax service (charges apply). We hold information on lots of topics - come and ask us a question. We'll do our best to help you find the answer!
Interested generally in researching your Family History? Check out our Virtual Library at www.bedfordshire.gov.uk. There's a wealth of information on Local and Family History in the Libraries part of the website, including many links to family history websites in the "Gateway to the Internet" section. Also step-by-step guides to help you get started. If you don't have a computer at home, then pop into Shefford Library to use a computer FREE of charge.
At Shefford Library there is now a computer dedicated to family history, on which the British Vital Records Index (1538-1888) has been installed on CD-rom, as well as the Vital Records for North America (1631-1888) and Australia (1788-1905). It also has the 1881 Census and the National Burial Index on CD-rom.
Did you know you can view the International Genealogical Index (IGI) for Britain on our microfiche reader? This resource can be very helpful in tracking down elusive ancestors. Have you bought or been given any microfiche for family history (you can often buy these cheaply from family history sources) then feel free to bring them into the Library to read on our Microfiche Reader.
Regular activities include:
• weekly Storytime for under-5s at 2.30pm on Mondays during term time
• regular Children's Activity and Craft mornings
• "Chatterbooks" Reading Group for 8-12 year olds
• "Creative Youth" workshops for 12-18 year olds
• "Silver Surfer" computer taster sessions for "the terrified"!! Ask for details of our FREE one-to-one computer taster sessions.
• Weekly Citizens Advice Bureau drop in sessions
• Regular County Councillor and Mid-Beds Councillors Surgeries
We have frequent evening events on a variety of themes. All of these are advertised in the Biggleswade Chronicle, also in the glass fronted noticeboards in the Library entrance as well as on posters throughout the Library. Recent events have included Chicksands Priory, Hoo Hill Maze, Dunton Community Garden and Poetry Readings. We are planning a Quiz Evening on 25 May so look out for more details.
Problems getting to the Library because of health or age difficulties? Know someone in this situation? Ask about our Housebound Readers Service. We can select books and other items for collection by family or friends, or can even arrange for someone to deliver them to your home.
Virtual Library
Just like your very own library service on-line. Check it out at www.bedfordshire.gov.uk and select "Libraries" from the menu. You will find information from the general (eg local information) to the specific (opening hours of a particular Bedfordshire library).
Did you know?
Joining the Library is very simple - and absolutely FREE! To apply for full membership you will need to show two documents to prove who you are. One must show your current address, and the other just needs to show your name. Just visiting? Just moved in? Don't worry if you don't have any proofs of identification - an Instant Ticket will enable you to borrow a limited selection of items immediately and also to use the computers.
Did you know?
You can renew your books even when we are closed? If you have a library card and pin number (available from the library) you can renew your books until midnight by phoning our Callpoint service on 01234 228930. Or you can renew or reserve items online 24 hours a day.
Shefford Library is in the High Street, Shefford.

WHAT IS A PCSO
|
Often a complaint to the police or a visit to your home by a police representative to offer advice and assistance with security or some other matter will bring you in contact with a Police Community Support Officer. PCSO's are not regular police officers and do not replace police officers but are an additional uniformed presence within communities as the eyes and ears in your area, reporting back to both police and partner agencies of the concerns of your community. They wear different uniforms and work from police stations managed by police supervisory officers. They work in a targeted area and their duties include:
• support for the police in improving public safety
• dealing with truants, graffiti, abandoned cars and missing persons enquiries
• helping to support victims
• assisting with house to house enquiries
• involvement in patrolling major public events and ceremonies
• helping to control crowds
• protecting the public from security threats
• anti-social behaviour
Additional responsibilities may include police powers to:
• detain someone pending the arrival of a constable
• direct traffic and remove vehicles
• issue fixed penalty notices in relation to a range of anti-social behaviours
PCSO's will provide a visible presence in the areas they serve. This is the police terminology for saying you will see them patrolling in the streets. There will no doubt be a good deal of comment about that as the absence of police on the streets is one of the main criticisms of the force today.
There are two women PCSO's operating from Shefford at present and no doubt this will improve because their numbers are increasing all the time throughout Bedfordshire. It is also likely that they will be given additional powers as the PCSO system develops. The initiative and funding is from the Government and the Bedfordshire Police Authority, and if my opinion is of any value, I would say they are here to stay.

We are hoping to get lots of entries this year - so come on - show us that all our hard work is worth the effort.
We have a new photography class this year. We want you to take three photographs on a theme of your own choice (i.e. flowers, water, birds), mount them on a piece of card and enter them in the show. We have given you some ideas but let's see how many different themes you can come up with.

SHEFFORD GALA
|
The preparations for the Shefford Gala to be held at the STMA grounds are taking shape successfully and very quickly. The Saturday evening Family Gala Disco already booked and tickets will be available by the time you read this. The Sunday, June 4th events are not far behind.
The parade, due to leave Robert Bloomfield School at 11.30am, is already six floats strong and will be flanked by the Shefford Majorettes, a host of stilt walkers and the very popular and colourful Toque Tambar Samba Band' who have made a substantial contribution in the past to many larger events in the county.
The Gala itself (due to start at 12noon) is also growing in popularity with groups and organisations along with individuals and traders all seeking to have a stall on the day. At £10 and £25 a pitch respectively and an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 visitors expected it is not surprising that places are going fast.
However, there are still places left in the parade and on the Gala site, but you need to act swiftly to avoid disappointment. If you want to join in what promises to be the event of 2006, get on the phone NOW and book your place. Phone Martin Wren on 01462 816586 or the Town Clerk on 01462 816321.
The Gala is also providing an afternoon of FREE entertainment. Along with the many stalls, this currently consists of a classic vehicle display of at least twenty vehicles, the Samba workshop, ferret racing, birds of prey, exotic dancers, judo demonstrations and fire fighters display of equipment and skills.
More entertainers are requested, so if you have a talent, show or display you would like to entertain us with, please pick up the phone!

SHEFFORD CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
|
Our fund raising Race Night was extremely popular, with people being turned away at the door!! Last
year we were only able to sell 60 tickets, but this year because the stage in
the Community Hall has been removed among the many alterations taking
place, we were able to offer 80 tickets for sale. This meant an immediate
increase in profits, and together with increased sales at the bar and an
increase in the money from the Tote, this was our best year ever. However,
we must not jump with joy too soon, as I have no doubt that the Insurance
Company will want a large slice of our profit.
During the summer we shall be checking our displays and cables. We have one more cable to replace this summer and then we shall have renewed all our cable within the last year, except for the Church Walk cable which is only about four years old. All the other cable was original - about 15 years old.
We shall be holding another fund raising event at the Shefford Gala. This will be our annual Balloon Race. Please look out for our stall, although we hope to sell lots of balloons before Gala day. If you see somebody selling tickets for the Balloon Race please buy one, as all proceeds go to the Christmas Lights.
I know I keep repeating it, but all proceeds really do go to the Christmas Lights. We have no admin or other expenses. Everything is carried out by volunteers and all equipment is paid for by us or is sponsored by local businesses.
The Shefford Lights display really is something worth supporting. You can support us at any time by putting some money into the large bottle on the bar at the White Hart Hotel. All contributions are gratefully received.

SHEFFORD ART SOCIETY
|
Do you enjoy painting? Whether you are an expert or a beginner, why not come along to one of Shefford Art Society's meetings where you can meet new people and enjoy the demonstrations or painting evenings. We also hold an annual exhibition, this year it is on Saturday, September 30th and Sunday, October 1st with a preview evening on Friday, September 29th.
We meet on the second Wednesday of the month in the Community Hall, Ampthill Road from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
May 10, July 12 and October 18 we hold painting evenings, on June 14, September 13 and November 8, demonstration evenings. August 9 will be an outdoor painting evening with December 13 a painting and social evening.
Why October 18 you may ask, well the 11th is ALWAYS Shefford's Charter Fair date. If you enjoy that, you won't want to come to the meeting. If you don't enjoy the fair, you won't want to come either!
For more information about the society please contact Dianne Carr, Publicity 01462 816968 or Peter Samuels 01525 961611

YNU - Christian Aid
|
On the 1st - 2nd April, the Shefford YNU youth group fasted for 24 hours. We had a great time with a huge amount of support from the local community. The money came from Bag Packing at Somerfields raising £174.20. The bring & buy and coin collection at St. Michael's church raising £227.82. Plus sponsors and donations.
On Sunday we visited Shefford Methodist, St. Michael's and All Angels and then Shefford Baptist with a brief summary of the famine and a short drama showing how children as young as 5 were kidnapped and forced to fight in the 10 year war in Sierra Leone. Now there has been peace for 2 years they are trying to rebuild their lives and their country.
We have a rough estimate of the amount raised a HUGE £1,016. We will know the exact amount in a few weeks time. Of course there is still time for more donations- phone Jenny on 01462626101 or drop them in to 95 Clifton Rd Shefford.
For the first time, some Adults who were not part of the group fasted to show their support - thanks.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us either financially or practically.
GOD BLESS
Jenny, Jackie and all the (tired and hungry) young people of YNU.
Ps. lots of people ask us what YNU means..... it stands for Y not U or why not you

SHEFFORD SCOUT TROOP
|
The Spring term was extremely active for the Scouts with a theme of "Grubs-Up". There has been menu planning,
cooking on hexi-stoves, an attempted night ambush and a pancake night (ever tried cooking a pancake on a Trangia'- ugh!). The scouts also prepared a delicious Mothers Day Meal for a specially invited person, in the
dark, over campfires.
To end the term the Patrol Leaders and their Assistants revived an old Shefford Scout tradition and spent a weekend camp working at Woodlarks - a camp site for disabled people in partnership with volunteer helpers. Dave Jordan started taking Scouts and Venture Scouts there in the 1990's, unfortunately this tailed off, but did leave a legacy as some ex-scouts, along with their partners and friends, still form an annual Woodlarks working party.
Our present Scouts worked exceptionally hard throughout the weekend, clearing bracken, refilling holes, clearing more bracken, resurfacing the grassed car park, cleaning barbeque areas, clearing more bracken and to the delight of some chopping and logging trees. The Warden was genuinely surprised at the amount of work completed and encouraged them to 'come back again'.
"Shefford Scouts did us proud."

FRIENDS OF SAMUEL WHITBREAD
|
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Cryptic Quiz and helped us to raise funds for the college. Entries are now being marked by the quizmaster and the winner will be announced on the Friends page of the college website and notified by telephone.
In the coming term the Friends will be hosting two social events to which everyone is invited! On Wednesday 28 June mothers, daughters and girlfriends can escape world cup fever and have a girls' night out at our very own fashion show with students, staff and parents modelling high street fashions which will then be on sale at competitive prices afterwards. Entry includes a free drink and only costs £2.
On Friday 7 July use your detective skills to work out 'whodunnit' at our Murder Mystery Evening which will feature the acting skills of some of our GCSE Drama students. There will be a licensed bar at very reasonable prices and tickets will only cost £5. Tickets for both these events will be available from the college reception from the end of May.
Looking further ahead in the autumn term we look forward to having our popular Attic Sale and a General Knowledge Quiz Night. Details will follow!

NEW DROP-IN OPENS IN SHEFFORD
|
A new Drop-in for parents and their pre-school children has opened in Shefford.
This new venture is funded through the Healthy Living Initiative and run by Manor Farm Family Centre (part of Christian Family Care). The venue for the new Drop-in is the Shefford Baptist Church which is in Bedford Road, Shefford, just off the mini roundabout on the junction of the Bedford Road and Stanford Road.
The Drop-in is open to all parents and their pre-school children and will be run by trained staff from Manor Farm. There will be activities for the children and an opportunity for parents to meet other local families in a relaxed and supportive environment. The staff will be available to welcome you and local Health Visitors and Early Years Advisors have offered to come along from time to time.
Shefford Baptist Minister has fully supported the new venture by giving the go-ahead to the Drop-in using the Church rooms free of charge and Manor Farm are very grateful for his support.
The Drop-in is open on Tuesday afternoons from 1.00 - 2.30pm. Craft activities and a healthy snack will be provided for the children. There is no charge for the Drop-in although a donation is welcomed. There is car parking at the rear of the Church.
Any queries please do not hesitate to telephone Manor Farm Family Centre and ask for Ginny, Linda or Anita on 01767 683015.

SHEFFORD & DISTRICT ANGLING ASSOCIATION LTD
|
The association established over a century ago and currently with around 700 members is the local coarse fishing society based in the town. At the AGM held at the end of March a presentation was made by the club Chairman, Pete Alien to Club President, John Leath and his wife Pat in recognition of the long and valued service to the club over many years.
The meeting also saw presentations to Pete Henegan and Vie Jackson for their success in matches and to Colin Smith who took the overall specimen trophy with his 3lb 12oz perch from Broom River. Subscriptions for the coming year will show a slight increase but the existing car park keys will be retained. New club cards, usable immediately, should be available from the local tackle shop (Andy's Angling in the High St) from 1st May.
The club has also stocked their new water,
Willow Pool at Willington, with almost
20,000 fish and acquired a large stretch
of the River Great Ouse downstream
of and including the large weir-pool
at Paxton. Sadly, because of
difficulties with the newly fitted timed
access gates the stretch at Sharnbrook will be unavailable in
addition to the stretch shared with Luton at Wyboston.
Lots more information can be found on the club's website www.SheffordDAA.org.uk or one can contact Colin Smith on 01462 812265.
